This
snack mix relies on a lightly sweetened popcorn to give it just the
right flavor. We prefer "Mallow Magic" popcorn from Jolly
time. But the "Caramel" flavor variety from Act II is also
yummy. Or just use your favorite kettle corn. To
make this mix you'll need:
popped "Mallow Magic" popcorn, cooled
raisins
dried sweetened cranberries
small twist pretzels (hard type)
goldfish crackers, multicolored
For a good sized group we usually make 3 bags of
popcorn, plus 1 bag of goldfish, 2 cups of pretzels, plus 1/2 cup each
of raisins and dried cranberries. But you can make it in
whatever proportion you like. For a special treat, you can
even add in some M&Ms.
Note: the "Mallow Magic" comes with packets of gooey icing to put
over the top, but we didn't find it necessary. And of course
it adds extra calories and sugar.
This snack mix mixing activity lets kids create a
custom mix that they eat at snack time. You'll need an assortment
of snack items, such as:
raisins
goldfish crackers, plain or cheese
Chex cereal
Life cereal
Cheerios
square pretzels
peanuts (only if no children in your group are
allergic to nuts)
yogurt covered raisins
Label a Ziploc baggy for each child, so you
don't lose track of which mix belongs to which child! Put
each ingredient out in a bowl. Have children wash hands then give
them a baggy. They can choose how much of each ingredient goes in
their baggy. For snack time, why not have a picnic outside.
This way you can make the most of this easy to carry, easy to serve
snack.
Let preschoolers make their own snack
necklaces to nibble during the day.
You'll Need:
yarn
masking tape
Cheerios or Fruity Cheerios
First cut a long piece of yarn for each child
(must be large enough to fit over the head when strung and tied).
Wrap one end of each piece of yarn with masking tape, to make a firm
threading end (no needles required).
You can also make a "tag" by folding
a small piece of masking tape over the other end and letting it
stick to itself. Write the child's name on the tag. This
is important as they often take their necklace off part way through
the day and can become quite upset when someone takes their necklace
by mistake.
Start by having the kids wash hands. Now
give each kid a small bowl of cereal and a piece of yarn.
You can have them share a bowl, but remind them not to snack while
they work or they will spread germs through the bowl of cereal (from
the saliva on their fingers).
If you use the colored Cheerios, you can
encourage the children to make fun patterns as they work.
When a child loses interest or fills his
string, you can tie the ends together to make a necklace. Be
sure they don't fill their string completely or it will be hard to
tie it off.
